HAWERA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Hawera Borough Council was held on Wednesday night; present — the Mayor' (Mr B. C. Robbins), and Cars Morrissey, Whitting- , km, Campbell, Wilkinson, Paoey, and Foy. CORRESPONDENCE. \ Mr G. E. Major, M.H.R., wrote enclosing a letter from the Colonial Secretary, stating that the Council's representations with reference to certain provisions of the \ Fire Brigades Bill will receive careful attention.— The Mayor said they ought to draw Mr 'lulajor'fc attention to the fact that the Council's objection with reference to the limitation, clause in the old Bill was now contained in the amending Bill in clause 5, sub-clause .A and C. H& moved in that direction. The motion was seconded by Cr Foy and carried. Mr D. Berry, for the trustees of Pikett and Wilkie wrote saying that the Gloverroad extra' contract had been started and would shortly be finished. The South' road contract would' be commenced about 12th or 14th met., and would be pushed ,on. to completion. . - < .->.'. Mr Berry also wrote, ;n reply fo,a letter ,£rom ths Town Clerk, pointing but that permission was never, given -jfor any stone to be taken from their -heaps.. If,requir-" ed the Council could ; have .'tE© quantity .taken, at 9s 3d per cubic yard. — In answer to Cr Wilkinso'n, the Engineer said about 3,0 yards , were taken.— The 7 Mayor said ,the stone in one sense was the; Council's. It was to be used on the' /Glover and South roads. He "might state ■ that everything connected with those contracts had been 1 satisfactorily .arranged, and 1 the Council was protected in< every way. — Cr Campbell moved, That before any stone was allowed' to be taken permission first should. be obtained from the persons in authority. L. .Joll^ Okaiawa, wrote stating that he- understood' the Council was under a promise to. supply him with water at a certain price for a certain number of years*., •'\ H&' wished ;to Jcnow .whetherthat time had yet expired. rf He -pointed out that through -title water- being, laid on. to the factory the Council gained, four other consumers by the f writer allowing them to tap his pipe, thereby reducinghis pressure considerably. As the pipe .was fin from Phillips' his consumption could not be extraordinarily heavy, ee- [ peciaJly when three others were supplied from that some pipe.— The Works Com£ mittee, recommended that Mt T. L. Joll' be; supplied' with water at factory t£ll> March 31, 1908, at £10 per annum; and a meter then be put in, charge to be Is 3d per 1000 gallons. — Cr Whifstongton moved that the recommendation be adopted. — Cr Foy moved as .an amendment • the recommendation with thewords added' "plus ten per cent." The* amendment was lost and the motion car- i ried. , ' ' ; j Gibsons Limited wrote saying that on i October 4 their drain was overflowing/- : and at the advice of the Borough En- ( - gineer the firm employed a drain layer. ' The fault was found where their drain ' leads into the sewer in Napier street.\ The connection, which ,was very badly made, caused' the blockage. They enclosed an account far £1 *7s 3d, which they requested should be refunded. — The. . Mayor moved that the account ' be paid. Seconded by Cr Whittington and cair-, ' ried.
