Hie stock has been sold for the highest price of any horse in the Taranaki district. Two have been sold at £500 each, and several unbroken at from £20 to £100, thus showing his worth as a sire. WHAT'S WANTED— NKW BLOOD FOB THE DISTRICT. TO Stand at Hawera and Travel (Monday and WednesoW) PATEA ; (Tuesday) WAVERLEY; MannTAHI; rest of week at%AWERA. A^^ ' The Thoroughbred wHBI PATRONUS (3) .gmiJLmmJjLlf Placida — Patron. Bred in Victoria. As will be seen by tabulated pedigree appended. Patronus is overflowing with running blood, a fact which has been -conr clusively proved by his performances, as over all distances and under heavy weights he has been successful. His sire, Patron, is one of the few horses that have carried I over nine stone to victory in that great j event, the Melbourne Cup ; and when we mention that he was sold by- auction ,in England for 4100 guineas, whilst : his full I brother, Rue^aalf, commands a stud fee of thirty guineas in New South Wales, some idea can be formed of the value, set on these horses for breeding purposes. On j their sire, Grand Flaneur, it "i<». quite un- ; necessary to pass ,any comment as undoubtedly he was in the front rank of' Australian-bred horses, either as racehorse ' or sire. On his dam's side Patronus can lay claim to equally good blood, his dam Placida being by Lord Wilton, winner of the Adelaide Cup and many other minor events, and was full brother to Footstep, dam of Footbolt, one of the most brilliant horses ever bred in Australia, beating, as he did, that great mare Wakeful, weight for age. The sire and dam of Lord Wilton and Footstep— Countryman and Instep — were both' imported to Australia, and through, tlhem Patronus claims relationship with two more Melbourne Cup winners, viz., The Assyrian and Auraria, thus through the latter being brought, in line with Aurum, Sainfoin and Rock Sand. Fenella 8., the dam of Placida, wasiout of Fenella, full sister to Maribyrnong, they, being out of the imported mare" Rose de Florence (by Flying Dutchman), a mare that is generally conceded to be 1 one of the corner stones of the Australian Stud Rook. It will thus be seen that the horse under notice combines the three great strains — Stockwell, Fisherman and Yattendon — in a marked degree, and it would be quite impossible to trace the pedigree of any of the greatest successes of the New Zealand Turf without finding the names of one or more of these embodied therein. To those who defer to the opinion of Mr Bruce Lowe, it will be interesting to note that Patronus belongs to No. 5 Family, ' as that gentleman lays it down that this ia the greatest of all families, both, for sires and running, and when ,we mention that in New ' Zealand it has been represented by Musket, St". Leger, Apremont, Sou-wester, Dreadnought, etc., we think the most sceptical^ must be converted. Patronus was a* good honest racehorse, and raced for four years, winning V.R.C. Maiden Plate, Veteran Stakes, Brunswick Stakes, Bagot Handicap (top weight, one mile five furlongs, beating Lord Cardigan), Moonee Valley and the Maribyrnong, Cups, etc. I / Cap-a-pie, imp.
