When ihe sold this land he intended getting all his cash in and compounding with his creditors. He had ' been trying to sell the place for 13 months ' and had instructed Mr McAlpine to sell i for £550— what- it cost him. This was ' £400 for a factory erected; on the place ! and £150 for the goodwill. H© was losing money on the place and Watkins. and March's offer was the best and only one ' he received. By selling half of Candy's faam (200 acres freehold) in July,. 1905, be received ' £1400 cash and had /implements in addition. His stock was then worth £1500. He sold Crabbe's place about 2 months ago for £225 and lost £25 and comrnis sion. About last February he put 'up a factory on Stevens' place at a cost of £400 exclusive of his labor. A slander case cost him about £100. Most of his tramsactions were made through Mr McAlpine, who financed 'him in the factory venture which was a failure owing to the late time at which he commenced operations.
