A witn&ss in a cruelty to animals case at Christohurch, in which, a severe penalty was inflicted, said that when he visited the section where the ill-tTeated horse was kept, there were no traces of foad except j a very little old chaff lying about, and | there was no water. The horse was in a very weak state. Witness visited the paddock on seroral other occasions, and then© was still no food. On the last occasion the horse was cast, and unable to r. : SB, being actually in a dying state from starvation. He called in a veterinary surgeon and had it shot. The feed boxes [ were gnawed down to- the nails, and contained shingle th»t witaiess had put in 9ome tim>& before to see if food was put in.
