OBITUARY.

HON. J. T. PEACOCK

[PBESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, October 20. The Hon. J. T. Peacock died this morning.

Deceased was the eldest son of Mr John J. Peacock, and was born in 1827 in the Rawkesbury district of Xew South Wales. He came to New Zealand when 15 years old, and settled down in Canterbury as a merchant and shipowner. He sold out of that business in 1863 and visited England. He was a member of the Provincial Council in the early days, and Secretary for Public Works for two years. In 1869 he wai elected member for Lyttelton, and five years later was called to the Legislative Council. He was one of the original promoters of the Kaiapoi Woollen Company, of the Union Insurance Gompany, and of the New Zealand Shipping Company. Deceased, who was twice married, leaves a widow and two stepsons.
