A JEWELLER'S QUEER PREDICAMENT.
t night, about ten o'clock (says the ne Argus, of 'the 14th inst.), Conames, on duty in Elizabeth street, lan hanging in a lop-sided fashion inn to an electric-light pole, while Mono he apostrophised an iniaginrouce, descanting on has enormous and gesticulating wildly with his free arm. As the constable drew near his eye was oaught by the gleam of a large diamond on the man's hand, and a closci' examination of the man showed that he was wearing a, diamond ring and a sapphire ring both of great value. He had a diamond' 'stud in his shirt front, and a
heavy gold chain shone across his vestHe was incapably drunk, so to protect him from thieves the constable put him into a cab and drove to Iho watch-house.
There it was found that- his name wn& Israel Finestan, jeweller, of Bell sheet, Fitzroy. The customary search of his clothing proved the constable's foresight in locking him up; „ Tho man would havo been worth a 6mall fortune to tho first thief who met him. From one pocket were produced two packets of unset diamonds, all of considerable value. In another were half-a-dozon gold Tings, set with valuable stones; and from another pocket the constable drew out a weighty packet., which, on being opened, was found to contain nearly a pound-weight' of smelted gold. In addition there was a handful of gold coins of various centuries, and receipts and documents from various banks. Attached to the gold chain that had attracted the constable's aititention was an expensive gold watch. Such a. valuable propertylist has probably never been made out before in '.he City Watch house, and the greatest car© was taken over it. The owner of all this • wealth stood helpless and careless, Ids head wagging from 6ide to side as he asked foolish questions, and made inane protests. He was put into a cell, and left to' recover. About an -hour later, after a short sleep lie awoke, a little sobered. He felt his pockets, and discovered that his property was gone. Then he .raised an outcry. Ho seemed to know he was in the lockup, for he shouted he had been robbed, and that the police had robbed him. His relatives were informed of. his arrest and they appeared and took charge of .him at a later hour.
