LOCAL AND GENERAL. On page 4 all interested in Rugby football will read with interest suggestions foe improving the game by Mr G. F. C. Campbell, President of the Ntw Zealan.J Bugby Union. A party of scholars from ihe Convent School spent an enjoyable day at Winks' Bush, near Normanby, on Monday. A good deal of good-natured commentwas made on Monday upon the fact that an asphalt crossing was being made in High Street joining Councillor Whittaker's place of business on the one side and that of the Mayor {Mr Bobbins) on the other. It was allege! that those gentlemen were making good use of their position on the Council. It appears that eight of tho&s whose places are in the immediate vicinity of the crossing each subscribed 10a, mak ing up half the total cost of the work, anu that only the remaining moiety is to be borne by the Council. The- crossing will undoubtedly Ira of great public conveni ence. .- A boy of about 15 years, who was examined by Messrs &wsliey and Whit? taker, J's.P., has .been orde^d, cv. the authority of medical certificate*, .to l.c committed to the Porirua Asylum 1 . ' \ Captain Hutton states -that no malarial mosquitoes- (Anopheles) have been found in New Zealand, and it j s concluded that iw&l .they have been introduced no malaria c»n /yrisc from infection in the colony. " Auckland seems to be a place wbejie ; no ' .business is transacted without' a dr^nk/' .s.a/d Hfr Gresbam (Coroner) at an inquest on SM urda y morning." "You have a drink before y»u make your purchase, and when your pueeb^sp is made you adjourn to a hotel."
