THE DEPUTATION TO THE GOVERNMENT.

A deputation of Hawera public men (Messrs Winks, Major, Heslop, and Cowern) waited on the Minister of Lands with reference to the Tangahoe Valley road. The Government, it was understood, intended to put £1,200 on tbe Public Works Estimates as a £ for £ subsidy for the road, and the County Council objected to this. ■■

The deputation pointed out that the council had already spent several hundred pounds in making the road, which would open up a main arterial road leading to Crown lands, and they urged, therefore, that any vote given shoulfl be a straight-out vote, and not given as a subsidy on a £ for £ basis.
