Captain Edwin, who is secretary of the Wellington Bowling Club, has been pre. sented by members with an umbrella. In returning thanks he said he bad not made any preparation for the reception of such a gift, because they might remember be bad said there was going to be a frost.

Lest dwellers in tbe out districts should think that they have the bad roads all to themselves, let us say that tho other evening a oabdriver essayed to drive a young lady to her residence m town, but tbe street was so terribly muddy that tbe team was bogged. The lady ' splashed home through the mud, and the cabdriver absolutely had to dig the oab out.

The Ngaire Co-operative Dairy Company has achieved what we think is a record for Taranaki cheese, its shipment by tbe Kaikoura have realised 57s and 58s. Mr Hurst, the manager, and tbe company may well be congratulated. At a meeting it was decided to grant to Mr Thomas, the chairman of directors, a bonus of £15, in recognition of tbe hard work be has done for the company.

There was an excellent attendance at the second performance of ' "- Tbe Octoroon " on Wednesday evening, many vißitorß from outside places being present. Tbe drama went even better than on the previous evening, and the audience were liberal in their applause, the principals being again called before the curtain. The drama will be staged at Manaia this evening, and will be put on in ezaotly the same manner as at Hawera. There should be a good house.

The late Chief Commissioner of Bailways writes as follows to the Wellington Post ; — It appears from tbe reports in the papers that there is no intention at present of improving the Taranaki-Wel-lington train service. This is to be regretted, beoanse a change is much needed. A great deal has been spent to enable it to be done, and tbe traffics has inoreased bo as to jastify it. Tbe revenue per mile has grown from £511 per annum in 1891 to .£624 per mile in 1894. The revenue of the Hurnnui-Blnfi for 1894 was £611 per mile only, and a superior daily express is maintained there. NapierTaranaki is now better entitled to an equivalent service. Tbe line originally was not equipped for a better service than it has, but great efforts were made during two years ending Deoember last to effect necessary improvements. Engines were specially designed and [, built, and three or four of them are now running between Wanganoi and Palmer, ston, to give greater power and speed ; a large number of bogie and gallery oars were built; structures were rebuilt and

strengthened for heavier engines between Wanganui and Falmerston, and similar steps were taken at Taranaki; gradients and sundry appliances and stations were improved, with the object of meeting the growing traffic by a better service. All these improvements were brought to a

conclusion about the early part of this year. The essential changes required are — to start an hoar later from Taranaki and from Wellington with a daily express,

and to arrive in Wellington abouc an boar

earlier. Tbe start from Taranaki is inconveniently early for tbe steamer

passengers, and is only biweekly.

tbe North Island, therefore, is practically interested. Tbe diagrams for this service

were worked out in the Eailway offices last year, and the only difficulty now is to make equitable arrangements with the Manawatu Railway Company, which can no doubt be done if tbe Government is willing.
