ALTON.

(KROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.!

A meeting of ratepayers of the Alton Special Bating Distriot was held here last Friday for the purpose of discussing tbe Ball road improvements expenditure. Mr W. 0. Symes was in the chair. The secretary read the balance-sheet, showing a credit account of £47 3s lid. A very long discussion took place re late ex. penditure. It was finally proposed by Mr D. Hurley, and seconded by Mr Morrison, That tbe balance of loan account be expended .on improving the Ball road, from Mr Gibba' towards Alton, in grading and forming both sides, so as to drain the surface water off tbe roads. Carried unanimously, and meeting was closed.

It would be a great improvement to the Hursthouse road if the few stumps and logs were removed, as it would enable drivers to use the sides and bo save tbe formation. It is to be hoped the board will attend to this at on<je.

The telephone is aHaat an established fact. It is now open and ready for uue. It is likely to be largely patronised.

A meeting was called by Mr J. D. H. Hurley, proprietor of the Alton dairy factory, to settle price of milk for tbe coming Beason. There was a good attendance, Mr Bretherton occupying the chair. After a deal of. argument as to the best return. to farmers— oheeee or butter-making— it was left to Mr Hurley to do either. He intends to make butter till New Year, then cheese for the rest of the season. This is very fair. The following proposition was proposed Dy Mr Johnston, and seconded by Mr T. Allen, That tbe market value for milk stands good for the coming se&aon. Carried unanimously. A vote of thanks to tbe chair and tbe meeting terminated.

Game is not very plentiful this season. Quails have disappeared altogether. One sportsman succeeded in getting a dozen pigeons and a brace of pheasants for one day's shooting. Bags of sis or more pigeons are of usual occurrence.

We are getting a change of weather almost every hour, and colds are pre* valent.

Mr W. Amos, who has been under Dr Perkins' care for a fortnight with a sore eye, has been advised to go to Welling* ton to consult Dr McKenzie, oculist. It has bees feared that something has lodged in tbe eye. His. friends hope for his speedy recovery.— Jane 27.
