THE DEATH DUTIES.

(Per Press Association.) LONDON, June 23. Sir W. V. Harcourt said tbat when the colonies charged tbe estate duty tbe amount would be deducted when a similar abatement was conceded to Great Britain. He also explained that property in tbe colonies liable to other taxation would be exempt from the estate duties. The Times says it will be surprised if tbe concession made by Sir William Haroourt disarms the resentment of the colonies. As the matter now stands, the original demand is enforced unless a valuable consideration is paid for its removal. It also regrets Sir W. Harcourt's attempt at reciprocity on the cheap.

The Agents- General of tbe Oolonieß reserve their assent to the Chancellor's compromise respecting tbe death duties, pending their hearing tbe exact terms of the amendment, and they have plainly assured Sir Win. Harcourt tbat be has no right to tax property situated in the colonies. The Agents fear tbat the acceptance of a compromise will admit tbe principle of tbe scheme.
