LANTERN LECTURE.

Mr E. S. Thompson's lantern leoture given on Thursday evening, at Normaoby, was pretty well attended. The subject > was a trip through the Hot Lakeß district from Botorua to Lake Tanpo, and the piotures commenced witb views of Obinematu, the older . township, and natural wonders immediately id the vicinity; and next oame Eotoraa, the offioial centre of the district, with views of the Sanatorium, various baths, principal public buildings, private residences, and the marvellous thermal manifestations which occur about there. Wbakarewarewa, which Mr Thompson described, as . a complete epitome of the whole country, occupied a great deal of time, "and a very large number of views ' .Were shown illustrative "of what is to be seen in the locality. Tikitere was next visited, then cama Mokoia, Wairoa, iand Tarawera ; (the views, pf which, were of particular interest from the sad eveqts of 1886), Waidtapu va'.ley, Taupo, Wairakei, Tongariro. Lake Taupo, the upper waterß of the Waikato were all in turn represented, and in fact there -was more than two bonrB 1 display of most interesting views. Mr Thompson played the showman with adroitness and ability, though, ae, be said, it was his first essay in that line. But , a residence of .many months in the district partly on official business, partly in searoh of health and partly on artistic work bent, bad given him a fall knowledge of the featrirea most worth noticing, a"- keen- , interest in studying the medicinal .: and curative properties- of the springs, and a sympathy witb his piotures arising from paternity as regards the original photographs and the lantern slides, and made bis remarks full of interest. Odd scraps of biography, legeod. and history were pleasantly interspersed in the drier descriptions of scenery and information as to the peculiarities of thermal action, and the chemical proper* ties of the waters; so that the lecture, though long, was both entertaining and instructive. The only drawback was that the lantern was not sufficiently large tp bring out. witb complete sharpness some of the darker pictures ; bat this defect will probably be lessened should another lecture be given. The (series was concluded by a splendid view of Mt Egmonfe, of which Mr Thompson said that despite the- fiery attractions of the lake country m o object so entranoiagly beautiful was to bo seen there than the mountain visible daily to the people of Taranaki. At the conclusion of the lecture Mr Keubeta "White, presi* dent of the Normanbyj Horticultural Society, fmftved a voterofabanSsj whioh was duly seconded ;)ajd3, carried by acolamatioo. *
