Agricultural Conference'

WELLINGTON, June 1.

At the Agricultural Conference a letter was read from Mr Crawford, of Miramar, suggesting the formation of a society on tbe lines of Royal Agricultural Society in England. Resolutions were passed confining future representation to not more than two delegates lor each society, but allowing gentlemen who have special knowledge to attend to a number not mote than ten ; urging continuous efforts to extend markets, especially for wool, frozen meat, and dairy produce, and to frequent publio attention to reports thereon ; that it is desirable to subject all public departments to proper inspection ; that more facilities should be given to the study of veterinary science by giving scholarships ; that wheel tax should be removed from farmers' vehicles on tbe west ooast of the South Island.

Mr Ritchie said steps would be taken to prevent quarantine keepers running their own stock.

The Education Department sent word that it was intended to introduce special school books on agriculture,, geology, and mining. A proposal to encourage our beet by extending a bonus for 15 years was lost. Mr Cart wright {Hawke's Bay) said the industry tried there was an utter failure. Mr Grigg and others also opposed. The Conference has decided tbat all machines or implements used in agriculture with their parts should be admitted free of duty. Tbe secretary made some suggestions at* to the eradication of the destructive potato moth which has made its appearance in the colony. Mr M. Murphy, Christohuroh, was appointed permanent secretary of the conference.

It was decided further that tbe conference be held independent of Government aid in payment of travelling expenses. The Conference closed with tbe ÜBUal vote of thanks.
