WELLINGTON, January 8. At the annual meeting of tbe Gear Meat Company, the report recommending ths payment of a dividend of ten per cent. was adopted. Messrs. N. Beid and J. ■ Gear and Dr. Newman were re.eleoted directors. It was mentioned by one of • the directors that daring the ten years the company had been in existence it bad returned 105$ per oent. on oapital inTested. Tbe- land tax received up to date amounts to £298,01 0. Tbe income tax is payable on the 81st instant, and notices of assessment and tax notioes will be potted before tbe middle of the month. In to-morrow's Gazette tbe oolony will I be declared fiee from acab in sheep, and the pews will be at once officially commonicated to the various Australian Governments. WELLINGTON, Janaary 5. At tbe inquest on tbe body of Captain Kelly, of the ship Nelson, a verdict oi accidental death was returned. Tbe post mortem revealed the fact that tbe skull was fraotared, evidently caused by his falling on deck daring a gale on tbe voyage out.

The poet (Insac Watts, or Cowper, we forget which) was not very far wrong when- he penned this couplet, for certainly if c would be bat a dull monotonous thing -were it not for its pleasing contrasts. Whilst in mankind the contrasts are still more marked and numerous, for not only are their "physical features," bo to speak, different, but they differ intellectually and morally < also.
