The Dobßon-Kennedy troupe opened to a crowded house at Opunake on Tuesday evening. The Commeroial Hotel, Kaponga, is about to change hands, Mr. B. Cullinan, of Manaia, having become the purchaser. The Premier addressed a large meeting of his constitutents at Wanganui last evening, and was accorded thanks and confidence. A report is held over.

We regret to hear that bad newa in respect to tbe health of Mr. Thos. Bayly, of Waitara, was received in Hawera last

evening, in consequence of which Mr. Isaac Bayly drove off at once to see him.

On July 17 a man named Joseph Leuvenmark, a native of Sweden, dived from a platform 83ft. 3fin. high into Lake Michigan, thus breaking the world's record of 75ft. 7in., made by Blake, ofLam» beth, in October, 1888. i

The following is the varied list of crimes in respect to which the Grand Jury at Wanganui found true bills on Tuesday : — Cole, bigamy; Gray, stabbing; Hewitt, larceny ; Sbeenau, misdemeanous ; Fayman, murder ; Kenny, arson ; and Noble and Laing, robbery.

Many of our readers will hear with regret that Dr. Alexander proposes to leave Hawera very shortly. He has, during the past ten or eleven years or more, built up a large practice throughout the district, and his departure will be felt as a loss by many whose confidence he has secured and long enjoyed in his professional capacity.

From a wire from the Lands Department to the Clerk of Borough Council, we learn that a reserve of 600 acres is now being laid off for recreation purposes round Lake Rotokare. Very shortly there will be a capital summer road right up to the Lake, and it will be within a two hours ride of the borough. The reserve will then be appreciated by the burgesses, and it may also prove a source of revenue to tbe borough.

The Right Hon. W. E. Smith, D.0.L., M,P., P. 0., D.C., who death was yesterday announced by cable from London, was a son of Mr. W. H. Smith, of the Strand, bookseller, etc.. end was bom in Duke St. Grosvenor Square, on 24th June, 1825, and was educated at the Grammar School, Tavistock, becoming in dne course a partner in the well-known Strand firm. He unsuccessfully contested Westminster in 1865, but his candidature was renewed with success in 1868, when he defeated Mr. John Stuart Mill. He was Finanoial Secretary of the Treasury from 1874 to 1877, when he was appointed first Lord ot tbe Admiralty, but went out of office on the retirement of the Conservatives in 1880, and was appointed Secretary of State for War in 1885 on the formation of the Conservative Government in June of that year. He was appointed Chief Secretary for Ireland in January, 1886; the Salisbury Government fell immediately afterwards, and be held the appointment for only six days, bat in Lord Salisbury's second administration he was appointed Secretary of State for War. When" the Ministry was re- constructed on the resignation of Lord Randolph Churchill, Mr. Smith became first Lord of the Treasury and Leader of the House ot Commons. A few months ago he was appointed Warden of the Cinque Ports and died at Walmer Castle, the death place of tbe Duke of Wellington, who also held the position of Warden.
