Serious Gun Accident at Omata.

AC 4 o'clock on Saturday afternoon, news reached New Plymouth that a son of Mr. A. Bayly had shot himself. On Saturday he was out shooting 1 , and laid down his gun, which he had loaded after shooting a pheasant. On returning to the spot where the gun was lying, he picked it up by the barrel in the right hand. Tho hammer was then down on the cap. In raising the gun, a twig of fern caught the hammer and pulled it back sufficiently that, on falling again, the cap exploded, the result being that the charge entered the left arm, between the elbow and the shoulder, carrying away tne muscle ancL shattering the bone. The pluok of the boy, who is 13 years of age, was remarkable, and he bore up with great fortitude. After the discharge of the gun, the boy did not faint, but manfully walked to Mr. Fenwarden's house, a distance of ten chains, where he remained till the arrival of Dr. O'Carroll, who was in the vicinity at the time of the accident. The doctor examined the injuries, and found that the left arm had been shattered severely. Previous to bandaging tbe wound, the doctor extracted no less than eight pieces of bone, one of which measured an inch and three quarters inlengtn. On Sunday morning the lad, who had been taken to New Plymouth, was put under chloroform for an hour and a half, and fourteen pieces of shattered bone were taken away by Drs. O'Carroll and Leatham. A most remarkable thing was that the artery was untouched. The doctors hope to save the arm, but it will be so weakened that they fear he will no be able put it to much practical use. The lad will, on Tuesday next, again be put under chlorolorm, when a similar operation to that of Sunday will be performed. — Nowb.

The Kapuni (Skeetroad) school building will be opened on Friday next, 22nd June, \>y a soiree and concert. Arrangements are well forward, anditia expected that there will be a large attendance of friends and parents.

Ther* was a bad case ot fainting on Sunday night at the Wesleyan church, Manaia, through the heated state of the atmosphere. We have repeatedly called attention to the want of proper means ot ventilation in this building, and hope now that it will be attended to. It is preposterous that about forty-five to sixty people should be crowded into a building of the diminutive size of this church without the slightest opening tor the escape of air, which is not fit to be inhaled after tbe first ten minutes at most.
