[By Amateus Casual.] The salvage claimants in tbo Bellinger ease have obtained judgment for i'3so. with £50 costs. Football.— New Plymouth challenged Waitara, and played them to-day on their own ground with disastrous results, being beaten by four goals and three tries, or fifteen points to nil. Nothing worth sending you occurred during the match, the local men simply " smothering " their visitors. Whitehead and Hine played in excellent form, but "Bob" Tato was a long way off bis usual efficiency. Huirangi play Tikorangi next Saturday, when a good game is expected. Oar postmaster's assistant is of an artistio mind, and dotes on flowers and ferns, and loves to decorate the office with ornamental growths. It has in consequence assumed lately an appearance quite Arcadian, and altogether foreign to the surroundings of pigeon holes and sealing wax. The Waitara and the Masonic Hotels are both being renovated, and painted inside and out, much to the improvement of town in general, and the hotels themselves in particular. The Salvation Army has a laßt given us np fox a bad job, and in consequence, we

We regret to hear that Mr. O. S. Brodie, lately of Manaia but now a resident of Wellington, is suffering from the effects of cancer. Three operations have been performed, but his medical attendants say the case is very serious. The first trial match of the representatives of the Taranaki fifteen who have been picked to meet the English footballers, will be played to-morrow. The representatives will play all-comers, and it is hoped that the latter will bring a strong team into the field, so as to give the picked men hard practice. The match team has gone into hard training, bo that, although time is short, they hope to come up to the scratch on the day of the match in good form and fettle. The Taranaki News regrets to hear that Mr. Rogers, who sustained a severe sprain to his right ankle while playing in the county match on Wednesday last, is still nnable to get about, and his medical adviser states that he will not be able to play football again inside six weeks. The News adds :— This is unfortunate, as Mr. Eogers was selected to play for Taranaki againßt the English Footballers. It is generally conceded that he is the beßt quarter-back on the coast, and his place in the team will be hard to fill.
