COMMERCIAL.

MR. NEWTON KING'S WEEKLY EEPORT.

New Plymouth, May 5,

Cattle. — At Eahotu, on Tuesday, there was only a small muster of cattle, and little enquiry, bidding being quiet, good springera being most in demand ; yearlings made 148 ; springing cows, JB3 17s. There was only a moderate muster of cattle at Waiwakaiho on Thursday, bidding for all classes was more active, and prices advanced, probably owing, in a great measure, to the small number now coming forward. Very few young stock were yarded. Some extra good steers were well competed for; cows at or near calving were also quitted to advantage ; beef was fairly good. Calves made Gs to 11s ; yearlings, 14s to 178 ; 18-months steers, 225 ; 3-year bullocks, fresh, .£3 3s ; 3-year steers, good, £2 12s to £3 6s ; store cows, 35s to 40s ; cows, springing, £2 17s 6dto £i; good, £1 10s to £0 2s 6dj heifers, springing, £3 10s; backward, £2 10s; fat cows, £2 2s to JE3 3s; sheep, mixed, 6s Cd to 7s 6d. Land. — I sold an 80 acre farm at Stratford under the hammer, on Saturday, for .£2Ol.

There was some smart bidding for a section in the Tarurutangi district, on Saturday, it being finally knocked down to Mr. Bond for J&260. The section contained G9 acres, half bush.

Produce. — Potatoes and onions are dull of sale, and stores are full up.

Butter.— There has been good enquiry for salt keg during the week, prices varying considerably. The demand has been caused principally by a drought in Victoria and New South Wales, but from all 1 can learn prices are somewhat speculative, and, no doubt, will entirely depend on the severity of the drought.
