CHRISTCHURCH, May 6. A remarkable instance of spontaneous ignition occurred the other day in the threshing machine operating on some wheat stacks on a farm near Araberley, revealing an hitherto unsuspected source of danger. The wheat operated upon was very foul with smut which, it can only be inferred, is onder certain conditions highly inflammable, and was probably in this case tbe immediate cause of tbe accident. One of the bands at work at tbe machine, and at the time behiud tbe riddles, says that a sudden flash of fire overpowered him, singeing his face, but was unaccompanied by any noise, save a puff. The feeder knew nothing until he saw the straw ascending tbe elevators in flames, which - almost instantly enveloped tbe straw stacks. Tbe straw and untbreshed grain were consumed, but the damage to threshing plant was not serious.
