PATEA.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
The County Council met yesterday ; all the councillors present. Transfers were granted from Bank of Australasia, to Honeyfield and Kells, and to Kinsella. Committee's report was received re Hukatere gravel pit, which it was thought could be utilised for county purposes. The County had lately made application for seven acres of land at this place to bb set apart as a gravel reserve, and although no written reply had been received from the Land Board on the subject, the clerk stated that the commissioner had informed him that it would be doubtless granted. The chairman had made inquiries re carriage of the gravel by railway to Waverley racecourse, and found the terms exceedingly satisfactory, but will make further inquiries and report at next meeting. The committee appointed to wait on Waverley Town Board re main road through the township made their report, and it was proposed and carried that as the Waverley Town Board had assumed the right of management of the footpath and water-tables, the council would still consider the board entitled to follow on their undertaking. Tenders for gravelling the main road from Waitotara to Manutahi, at intervals, was opened, and the whole of them declined, being considered too high. His Worship the Mayor waited on the council with reference to the removal of the Land Office and clerk of the court from Patea; and suggested that the County and Borough Councils should consult as to the best means of petitioning the Government to place a Land officer and clerk of the court here for public convenience, it bein thought very detrimental to the district that maps and
information would, henceforth, have to be examined and obtained from New Plymouth. And in the case of the clerk of the court, if Justices were to dispence justice on most occasions in the absence of an R.M. a clerk of the court, fully qualified, would be necessary to guide them in legal matters connected with court business.
The council's committee met a committee of the borough at once, and the Borough Council met in the evening and decided that a petition from the two councils should be forwarded at once to the Premier.
Tenders were ordered to be called for gravel to close on 29th February. The Manutahi Domain Board then met and re-elected Mr. "Walter Symes Chairman.
The Hospital Board met at 4 p.m. and conducted ordinary busiuess.
It is with regret I have to chronicle the death Mrs, Hay, of Kakaramea, who succumbed last night from internal cancer. The deceased lady was the mother of Mrs. James Ball, and was much respected. She had been suffering for months from this dreadful malady, and her friends have expected her demise for some considerable time. The funeral will take place on Sunday next at 2 p.m.
Alterations and improvements to the Albion Hotel are proceeding vigorously.
