A STRANGE ENCOUNTER.

(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

(Received January 23, 2 a.m.)

SYDNEY, January 22.

Bnrke, the well-known pugilist, had a moßt peculiar experience in the harbor to-day while out for rowing exercise. Hiß boat was attacked by a shark of immense size, and he at once pulled hard to endeavor to get away from it, but the voracious monster kept alongside the frail craft. Burke kept struggling on until at last his boat opened out, and he was precipitated into the water. At this time he was about 150 yards from the shore, and he at once struck out for the shore. The Bhark attacked the boat, and commenced crunching it up, but Burke managed to reach tbe shore safely, and it is thonght that the boat being of a. light color attracted the shark while Burke, who wore a dark jersey, managed to swim ashore. Several instances have occurred lately where oarsmen have been pursued by sharks.
