(per united press association.)
(Received January 3, 2.10 a.m.)
SYDNEY, January 2
Grafton Regatta took place to-day, and : resulted' as follows :— Searle, 1 ; Nelson, 2 ; Hearn, 3. The race was a splendid one. The winner bad Beven lengths start, and Nelson gained half a length at a jump, but rowed himself to a standstill. Searle was expected to collapse every moment, and level money was laid on Hearn, but two hundred yards from home the latter had spurted himself out. Nelson came again, but Searle held out and won by two lengths, Hearn being the same distance behind Nelson. Hanlan was too unwell to start, but gave an exhibition of rowing with Searle over the last half of the course, and came in first. This led to an impression amongst the onlookers that Hanlan had started and bets w«e paid on him, and several fights took place in consequence.
