PATEA.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) The work of arranging fixtures in the ball for the coming exhibition is proceeding vigorously, and the exhibits are coming in far more freely than was anticipated. Several moat valuable pictures by Mr. Sheriff and others at WaDganui arrived by train yesterday in charge of Mr. Tennent, and the hanging took place in tbe evening. Two noted paintings by Mr. Sheriff — one 9ft x sft— are well worth study, and will, no doubt, attract much attention. A number of Wanganni ladies and gentlemen will give an entertainment at tbe exhibition on the evening of Tuesday, and comprise some of the best talent of Wanganui. Several performers are expected during the week from Waverley and Hawera and from other places, so that enjoyable entertainment will be provided each erening. A well supplied refreshment bar will "be constantly open, and tbere will be no fear but that many an enjoyable hour may be spent at the Fatea Exhibition during Christmas week. The Albion Hotel has been leased to Mr. C. D. Hawkins, and under bis able management will no doubt attract attention from the travelling public. Extensive repairs are to be at once effected, and tbe house put into ship shape. We learn that Mr J. Bull, who sustained a dislocation of the hip joint, besides being severely bruised, by being thrown from his buggy, is progressing as favorably as can be expected, but it will be some weeks before he can expect to be about again. The congregation of St. George's Church are to meet for the purpose of Xmas decoration on Saturday evening. I understand the Rev. Mr McKay bas accepted the Hawera incumbency, and will arrive soon to commence his duties. The s.s. Aoreri (a small boat of 44 tons register) was to have arrived here to-day, but has been detained owing to some difficulty as regards the insurance. The Harbor Board met yesterday, but I have not been able to ascertain what transpired. December 21st.
