The bench to-day dismissed it, ruling that tbe licensing couiinittee could grant permits to anyone they choose. The Admiral is not subordinate to Colonial Governors, and hah probably received his instructions direct from Home. All that is known, so far, is contained in the words " contract settled."
PALMEESTO^, NNt. t August 10. At the Police Court yesterday Charles O'Connor, on six separate charges of embezzlement of various sums from 30s to £2, from W. Weekes, by whom he was employed as a cook at the Manawatu Gorge, was committed for trial ou each charge.
AUCKLAND. August 11. At an inquest on the body of the girl Clara Wimlser, who died suddenly at Hamilton. The veidict was that death was due to natural causes.

James and Heuvv Cluna brothers, smd and Geor»e Clune, have been arrested on a charge ol'beeu concerned m the jewellery robbery.
