WELLINGTON, July 25. The Immigration Department have received by the direct mail an intimation from the Agent-General to the effect that he intends sending the next batch of nominated immigrants by the Arawa, which steamer left Plymouth on the 6tb
inst., Dunedin being her first port of call.
AUCKLAND, July 25. It is reported that Major "YVa/mstey, manager for tbe New Zealand Stud Company, and at present on a visit to England, has purchased, on behalf of the company, the stallion Limestone, by Wenlock Duvernay, and lull brother to Quicklime.
A fatal accident is reported from Helensville. Nicholas Hope, gumdigger, and a lad named Thomas Mack, aged sixteen, were out shooting at Ratura, two miles from Helensville, when the boy's gun accidentally went off, and the charge entered Hope's head behind the ear, blowing his brains out.
HOKITIKA, July 23.
A man named John Bowers was burnt to death in his bunk at the Back Creek, near Rirau, this morning. Three men and a woman had been drinking for some hours. All left but deceased, who was too drunk. A fire was burning on the hearth, and there was a quantity of firewood in tbe fire- place when tbe others left.
