In the Supreme Court, the following sentences were passed :— Jas. .Wall, for larceny 1 two years ; Sarah Jones, housebreaking, three months ; Thomas Kirk, two years' imprisonment. . • V CHBISTCHURCH, January 5. ..Jibe .Grand. Jury- made a presentment that they thought forgery :is greatly encouraged by the way in which cheques are leaned. They thought law might be' so, altered to make those who, issued cheques bear part of the loss. The banks, they suggested, should not issue cheques to other than their own customers.

The following sentences were passed : —Albert Payne, forgery, four years; Joßepb Eumble, breaking and' stealing, three years ; ; Alfred! Beckett, .-forgery; three years; J. Roberts, forgery, four years ; Jaa. Stewart, forgery, two years ; George E. Bentley, forgery, was placed under probation for eleven months. _ Alice Payne, for breaking and entering, and E.J. Beale, indecent assault, were acquitted.'
