HAWERA BOROUGH COUNCIL
The council met on. Wednesday evening. Present — The Mayor, Councillors Duff, Henderson, Kirk, McLean, and Scott.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
LEAVE OF ABSENCE.
Leave of absence was granted to Councillor Winks until fully recovered from his late illness.
APPLICATIONS
Applications were received from Mr. McNiven for permission to erect a sign-board and from Messrs. Kirk, Duff aud Co. for leave to erect a verandah.
Both applications were granted. FOOTPATH WANTED.
Messrs. Hay ward and Sinclair wrote asking for a footpath in Cambria Street. — Granted.
CLOSING- CEMETEBY KOAD.
Mr. T. Hutchison, solictor, wrote enclosing Draft Bill to empower the council to close the public road through the cemetery, a portion of which has been used as a burialground. The mayor stated that the Bill had been forwarded to Major Atkinson to bring before Parliament ; and that tke required notice had been published. The action was approved, councillors expressing their satisfaction that steps had been taken to acquire the ground for the cemetery.
FIHE BRIGADE ENTERTAINMENT
Mr. F. 1. Jones wrote asking for the patronage of his worship the mayor and the borough councillors for the amateur dramatic performance on Monday next. It was resolved to grant the request.
STBAY CATTLE,
Mr. Jackson, poundkeeper, applied for the post of ranger within the borough.
There was a general expression of opinion that something would have fo be done to keep the roads clear of straying cattle, and tlie mayor and Councillor McLean were appointed a committee to enquire into the matter and report to next meeting. Meanwhile the police are to be instructed to take proceedings against the owners of cattle wandering al large.
ACCOUNTS.
The following were passed for payment. Uobbins and Pierard £1 Os Gd ; Morrissey 8s ; Sasli and Door Factory Company £2 6s ; llaughey £1 5s ; Twjgg £5 ; Arnold £3 ; lunee and Co. £3 17s Gd ; Pay-sheet £18 7s ; A'Court £3 5s ; Syine £1 19s Gd.
TttEE PLANTING
The major suggested planting a belt of trees around the ground of the council chamber.
The suggestion was approved, and a resolution carried that the work be done.
SEAT VACANT
It waß resolved to declare councillor Lynch's seal vacant, nx\(\ to instruct the Returning Officer to take the necessary steps to fill the vacancy.
ADJOUiINED
This being all the business, the council adjourned.
