MEAT-TINNING AT PATEA.

I A meeting in favor of meat-tinning works at Patea was held there on Saturday, Mr. W. Oowern being voted to the chair. The result of the canvass 80 far as known and as given on the lists — Subscription in the room, £702; Messrs. Cbrißtie, ' Cox, and Kemptliorne, Mr. W. Wilson, £100; Mr. Foreman, £31; Mr. T. Nicholson, £123; Messrs. Hearn and Kennedy, £10 ; Paterson and Ball, £70; Mr. D. Peat, £30; Mr. Fawlcner, £15; Mr. C. Symes, £39; total, £1320. There were several lists to come in, so that this does not represent the full amount collected. Mr Livingston was said to have collected o.ver £200, making total up to about £1550. A proposal was made to call tenders for the, establishment of works, Mr. V. Smith, the mover, contending that, as one week a}l but£2so had been subscribed, there was ample assurance that the balance would be forthcoming. An attempt was made to raise the £250 in the room, but it was not successful ; and finally a motion was carried to adjourn till Wednesday next, when the general meeting of shareholders will be held re winding up the old meattinning company. We suggest that the new company should be known as Pbcenix, as it 6eems likely to aris,e out of the ashes of the defunct company. We gather from the report that up to the present no definite arrangement has' been entered into with any outside capitalists to reerect the works after the bonus has been raised. Messrs. McDougall and Jack's offer is apparently considered to be rat&er high. '" '
