Sib, — I have heard many curious remarks amongst the general public anent the preliminary trial of Waters, which took place on Thursday last at the Resident Magistrate's Court, in Hawera. Did it take our police officers all that time to prepare the indictment? or did they want to give Waters, a chance oi escaping ta"«H3i6 otnet country 1 To my mind, there appears to be some under-current in this prosecution, which the public have as yet been unable to fathom. If Waters committed a crime, he ought to have been prosecuted at the time of the accident. The whole affair savors of what My. Samnei "WeHer, junior, would call " tiddlywinking." There is a rumor that the police authorities have been " egged on " by parties who intend to bring civil actions, if the criminal prosecution succeeds. If such be' the case, a searching investigation ought to be held into the matter by the Minister of Justice. Of course, I give no opinion aa to the guilt or otherwise of Water*.
