Upon inquiry, we learn that in respect to the timber reserves to be made in the bush adjoining the Waimate Plains, tb'tf plans of the Government and the regulations to be made by the Commissioner of Cio\»n Lands, b&ve aot yet been definitely decided upon. It is intended, however, to reserve either four or five blookfl of about 1000 acres each. Three have been already located, one near Ahipaipa, one along the Manaia road on Skeet's line, and one on the Auroa road. On and after the Ist January next, licensee -will be issued to setters, giTing them the right to out timber for their own use for £1, and for sale for £5, during the year ending 31st December, 1881. All or any of these licenses will be snbjeot to absolute cancellation, if in tb* opinion of the Commissioner any wast* or xx>»3i&99 destruction has been caused. In the event of an application being made for the erection of a saw-miil, it will be dealt with on its merits, and if granted a special area will be assigned to the applicants. It is the intention of the authorities to confine the operatious of the wood- cutters to the bush, and not to aliow the shelter round the clearings to be destroyed. There will be a considerable quantity of felled timber along the road lines available for immediate use by the settlers.
