PUBLIC MEETING AT NGAIRE.
▲ SCHOOL REQUIRED. A meeting of Ngaire settlers took place on Monday, 15th December, at Mr. Stevenson's accommodation house, for the purpose of laying before the* Education Department the necessity of erecting a school in that district. Some fifteen settlers were present. Mr. Oodkin was voted to the chair. It was pointed out by Mr. Bosley that there were considerably over the number of children, now in the district, required by Government before such a petition could be considered, and that he was of the opinion that a school was urgently needed in the district. A clause from the Education Act was read, to the effect that a committee, coneietiag oi sqvea householders, shozdib \>e appointed. A c<jm.au.ttetf> consisting ot the following gentlemen, was accordingly appointed : — Messrs. Godkin, Cowern, Saugster, Southey, Moir, Calvert, Bosley. Mr. Southey was elected chairman. The chairman was requested to write to the Education Department, asking them to forward rules concerning sach local bodies. Also to ask if the Government would permit the building of the school on ground otherwise than that set apart for the purpose; provided such ground was in a more central position. Some fifteen names were then taken in the room to be afi once forwarded to the 'Education T>e- , partment. . ■ STATE OF THE MOUNTAIN ROAD. It was pointed out by^ Mr. Sout&ey that a sphool would be of little .use in the dis> tnct for a great part of the year, on account of the disgraceful state of the Mountain road, and that it would be impossible for children to walk even a few hundred yards, and then be in a fit state to attend ichooL He considered that the Government had acted shamefully hi the matter of the toad, tenders for the work having
now been refused four times ; • also a private tender considerably under what they offered to let it for last year. It was proposed by Mr. Cowern, seconded by Mr. Hawke, and carried unanimously — That Mr. Southey write to the Minister of T'ahh'c Works asking him what would be the highest tender the Government would accept for the worfc; and that if no satis&ctory answer was received, a petition be got up, and every one, concerned be asked to sign, urging that something at least might be done before the coming winter. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the business.
