Wellington, Friday night.
At the Resident Magistrate's Court to- ,■ day, Robert Atkinson, for horsewhipping Mr. McKellar, the Collector of Customs, Wellington, yesterday, was sentenced to six weeks' hard labor. The ■ prisoner pleaded extenuating circumstance, ..he alleging that at the inquiry regarding hjs dismissal from the Government service, Mr. McKellar suppressed certain evidence - in accused's favor. Christchtjrch, Friday,night. ■_>• .- The men at the Springfield quarry, who have been on strike for a week, have been obliged to yield to the masters' terms, and have accepted reduced wages. Auckland, Friday.night. A destructive fire occurred at East Hamilton last night at 11 o'clock, when . it was ascertained that the premises occupied by Messrs. Swan and Cochrane, wheelwrights, and Lane, blacksmith, were enveloped in flames. The premises were • erected on the site of former buildings that had been burnt down in January last, and connected with a large wheelwrights* shop and coach factory, together with - smithy and carpenters' department. Messrs. Swan and Cochrane had insured the building in the South British Company for ±220, but the stock and tools - were uninsured. Dunedin, Friday night. A telegram to the Star says that heavy nuggets, found in Jones's claim, Long Valley, Panama creek, range from one to four ounces. Auckland, Friday night. William Kohnan Curnow, was found guilty of rape on a child of twelve years, and sentenced to ten years' imprisonment with two floggings. Timaru, Friday night. The chief post office was broken into on Saturday night, but nothing except a few coppers were taken. One hundred and thirty men, fortyeight of whom were married, attended at the Town Hall on Monday morning, at the invitation of the mayor, and offered to proceed to the Albury railway on the terms proposed by the Government for the relief of the unemployed. The names of the applicants were taken for submission to the district engineer, who had promised employment for forty married men, who have the preference. The secretary to the unemployed urged the necessitous case of the single men, but was informed that nothing could be done beyond forwarding their representations to the Government officer. Wanganui, Friday night. The heavy rains caused a high flood in the Wanganui river. An immense quantity of timber came down. It is expected that much good will result in the scouring out of the channel. The Harbor Board has accepted the tender of Messrs. Kincaid and McQueen, Dunedin, at .£2,700, for the .dredge. Invercargill, Friday night. At the police court to-day, Dr. Moffat, of Winton,' who has been already found guilty by a coroner's jury of manslaughter, was charged with having felonously killed Catherine Cameron. Messrs. Harvey and Finn appeared to prosecute on behalf of the friends of the deceased, and Messrs. Wade and Turner appeared for the accused. The taking of the evidence of three witnesses occupied the .Court the whole day. Nothing new, however, was elicited, and the enquiry stands adjourned till Wednesday next.
