Carlyle, Friday.
On Thursday last a rifle match was fired between the Wanganui and Waverley volunteers, twelve men a side, five shots, at 200, 400, and 500 yards. It was arranged that the match should be a triangular one. The following are the scores of the Patea team : — King, 49 ; Kells, 46 ; Fr«s«r, 44; Smithy 44 i Kitohin& 41; Pringle, 38; Harden, 38; Chadwick, 35; Carey, 29 ; average for three men absent, 121 ; total, 485 points. The other scores were — Waverley, 426 ; Wanganui, 413. Our team thus beat Wanganui by 72, and Waverley by 59 points. The Native Lands Court, presided over by Mr. Parris, was formally opened on Wednesday, and the sittings will commence this morning. A large number of natives are in town. The use of the immigration barracks haß been granted to them.
