GOVERNMENT LAND SALE.
As was expected, there was a large attendance at the Government land sale on Wednesday, and ifcbe competition was keen, and the bidding brisk, from start to finish. Nearly every lot was competed for. Punctually at 11 o'clock Mr. Wray, 8.M., offered the first lot for sale, our worthy B.M. showing to great advantage in the r6le of " knigjit of the hammer." A few sections were bid for by telegram, and Mr. Wray advanced to the prices set down for the absent parties. In every case, however, the bidding in the room was highe than by telegram ; so that it made no difference whatever. The following is an extract from a lett r sent by Mr. Whiteombe, Commissioner of Crown Lands, New Plymouth, to Mr. Wray, previous to the sale :—": — " Some of the Canterbury applicants have given instructions as to the amount to which they are prepared to bid. Notes of these amounts are inserted in red ink in the schedule. The Government sanctions this arrangement, and any difference between deposit and amount bid will, if necessary, be paid on notification." The way the sale was conducted, apparently, gave general satisfaction ; but there were loud complaints afterwards from some of the successlul applicants, who were under the impression that their deposit money would go towards the first payment required after the sale. Many of the unsuccessful applicants were also disappointed, in consequence of not being able to get back their deposit money, and when they were told that they would have to go to either Carlyle or New Plymouth, they were not much consoled. In the other instance, the purchasers were informed that it would complicate the accounts if their deposits were mixed up with their first payments, and in consequence they would have to pay the amount in full, and would have thendeposits returned afterwards. This may be very convenient for those who have to keep the books, but if we mistake not, the Land Act clearly lays it down that the deposit money shall go towards the first payment required after allotment. If that be the case — and we are pretty confident that it is — the demand made for the full amount was quite unwarranted. The inconvenience caused to successful and unsuccessful applicants alike proves the urgent necessity that exists for having a District Land Office in Hawera.
