Thursday, June 24.In the House of Representatives, on ■ Thursday, a long discussion took' place on the motion for leave of absence being granted to Mr. Hamlin, who has gone to the West Coast, during which Ministers' " denied that any West Coast road was intercepted by a dismal swamp, as had been asserted. ' The no-confldence debate was resumed by Mr. Macandrew, who opposed further taxation as being entirely unnecessary, if real retrenchment were carried out; • Mr., Hutchison., strongly opposed Jbhe * policy of .the Government. ,. /^- .. ,. _._>, ; . . Mr. Ormond, "wliileV opposing- thef no*.. -. confidence motion, condemned the :Gq-j: Gq-j vernment policy respecting native lands, the property tax, and the method of dealing with local bodies. He insisted that the Estimates should be reduced by and urged the sale of the.railways and pastoral reserves, and the re--establishment of a modified form of Provincialism. Mr. Shepherd opposed, and Miv Sutton supported, the Government policy. Mr. Reeves moved the adjournment of ,; the debate. I Friday, June 25. In the House of Representatives to-day, I the Hon. John Hall gave notice that he would, on Tuesday, introduce a Representation Bill. The no-confidence debate was resumed" by Mr. Reeves, who advocated an export duty on wool and an import duly on coal. . He strongly condemned the Government proposals. Captain Russell defended the Government proposals, especially the property tax, but he rejected the exemption clause. Mr. Stewart strongly condemned the financial proposals. Mr.. Mason condemned 'the State expenditure for education, and he considered that it should not- go beyond providing primaiy education. Mr. Hursthouse is speaking in favor of the Government.
