The Hutt News Wednesday, May 9, 1945 V THE TORCH STILL BURNS

The War in Europe is ended. The 1 iglits come on again. But 1 throughout these years of blood and sweat and tears —through blackouts and defeats — there were certain lights that no device of the enemy could dim. The Torch of Freedom for instance; £j|fiantly held aloft by Churchill oh* behalf of the British people fighting oil alone. •* Over in oppressed and enslaved Europe millions of haggard, eyes looked across ravaged lands to - that ever-burning' Torch whose steadfast beams kindled in stricken hearts their first faint gleams f of hope—gleams that soon changed into a burning faithln ultimate Allied Victory. Now such victory is here —and the Nations cele-' brate. But in the midst of all the celebrations we must not forget all those by whose untold sacrifice such Victory has been achieved. The dead, and those who mourn them; the maimed and those who comfort them; the homeless; the bewildered; and the still great forces who must fight on in Eastern lands and seas. These have given—and are still giving—their lives and happiness to keep the Torch of Freedom burning, and upon us who have survived the holocaust, devolves the solemn duty of seeing that their sacrifice was not in vain. [The call is deal-— "We are the Dead . . . To You from failing hands we throw The Torch—be Yours to hold it high."
