MONTHLY MEETING

' The food vitamins, A, B, C, D, and E, their value and sources, were discussed by Min. D. K. Adamson, the speaker at the monthly meeting oI the recently held in St. James's Hall. Mrs, Adamson said that correct diet was essential for good health and well-being, particularly in the case of young children, who need vitamlhs and mineral salts to build up their teeth and bones, and assist in their general development. Most deficiency diseases, such as rickets, can be traced to lack of one or another of the five vitamins in the diet. Examples were then cited of illnesses that can be cured by corrective diet. At present, said Mrs. Adamson, housewives are faced with tne possibility of a shortage in supplies of raisins, figs and similar commodities, which are essential to maintain a balanced diet, and it is to be hoped that they will not become unprocurable. She suggested honey as an excellent substitute for raw sugar, as it is not treated in any way, but is a natural product. Mrs. Adamson answered various questions put to her by those present, and general diet problems were discussed. The president, Mrs, P. S. Guungham, who was in the chair, thanked Mrs. Adamson, and said she was sure her talk would make the planning of meals easier for those present. In the absence 01 the secretary, Mrs. Stevenson, who is on holiday, the business of the meeting was conducted by the assistant secretary, Mrs. S. Odlin. The serving of afternoon tea concluded a most enjoyable afternoon. ,
