RUGBY NOTES.

Mow that all the lower grade chanipionp&ips have ceased as far as the local teams are concerned, a short review of the activities of each team , should be of some interest. Probaibly the most disappointing team in the lower grades was: the Junior A. With the material available this fifteen should have finished up •] •within tho first three for championship honours. An abnormal amount of sickaesa took toll of many players early in the soason, but t>he failure of the team cannot be wholly attributed to , this cause. Slackness in attendance et ; the Oymnasiwn was evident many times, which had a big bearing on the team's performances. This fault pertained mostly to the forwards, and if the pack men are not in condition to do their job properly the backs will starve for want of opportunities. During the later part of the season it will be rememibered that several members of the A team were promoted to the seniors—Bradley, Killeen, Hansen and Boss more than justified their inclusion, which lends weight to the argument that the Junior A's had the material to make a better showing in the championship. Tho Junior B's had; at times to scratch for players, but "thinks to the energy and enthusiasm of Mr. MoGttir© the team was able to carry out the nmjoiity of its engagements, general players in this, fifteen were worthy of higher honours—J. JFeeney and I. Adams helped the senior team to victory in the Berhaanpore game, both playing very soundly. Stewart and Pterkins are good forwards. Beardsmore improved a lot during the season and should eventually do well higher xep. Clarke shows great promise as a wing forward. The Third grade team showed up fairly well. Lack of weight in the forwards early in the season cost a couple of matches. iAter on a couple of good grafters in Bushlby and Saulfcrey lent their weight, which fact saw a marked improvement in the play of the team as a whole. Evans, Williams and Silva were the king pins in the back line, which required a classy winger to make it really strong. Killeen, Baker, Bushby and Saulbrey were most consistent in the forwards. In the age limit grades the fourths fared reasonably well. A shortage of good backs was noticed in this team, fencer (half), "ciegg, (five-eighth), Patrick (centre), OUiver (-wing), and .tfayior (full iback) are boys of more than average ability. Injuries to.Patrick and OUiver seriously weakened the back line at the latter end of the aeason, as no reserves of any ability were available. The services of forwarde were utilised to fill the gaps. | The forwards were,, a, very solid pro-. I position and aome fo^rs senior players were noted. Daiton, Skippage, Goldfinch, Miller, MoHolm and %ster are all well built lads wjio,,have every thing fat their; favotrr to 'gitif&i in the' game. Hanratty is a .promising front ranker. Daltou was the outstanding forward and «ho«ld be sure of a place in the fourth reps. McHolm is the makings of a fine player, but is not keen enough at present to do himself justice, v Although t&e. Fifths did not win many matches, the players always rollad up for their game each Saturday. Harris and Phillips were two outstanding boys in th,e backs. This teem should be a strong one next season, as several very • promising boys from local schools will be. joining up; also a couple from other clubs. j

The Sixth grade teami was expected to get higher than third place in the Competition, but did not settle dawn properly until late in tth.e season when some good displays were given, Pcrkinson, Lowe, Piper and McGrath show promise as backs. In: the forwards, Evans, Connolly and Morrison showed consistent form. l

Fifth grado players who inatle the trip to Upper Hutt can eoUetet their ■travelling expenses from the secretary who has Teceived 2/- per head for sixten players. Sixth grade expenses will be handed to the coach (Mr. Hand) f«y diabuTseinent.

We beg to acknowledge with thanks receipt of cheque for £1/1/- from Mr. A. D. Thompson.
