The Hutt News THURSDAY, AUGUST 28, 1930. COMMUNITY LIGHTING.

The members of the executive of the Lower Hutt Chamber of •Commerce are deserving of the highest. praise and commendation for the manner in which they inaugurate and foster any movement which has for its object the of matters affecting business interests of our district. Not only are they concerned with the larger question's and economic problems affecting eoir.meree generally, but they evince a genuine and personal care .'':. the smaller matters' of ele'l. which taken collectively make for the general good. Of such a nature is the question of community lighting of our business area, and we are glad to find that the Chamber is taking active and practical «teps to foster so urgently required a scheme. The report publisiicd in our last issue of the meeting at which the Engineer-Manager of the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board, by special' invitation, met the members of the Chamber to discuss details and propositions for a scheme of community lighting for, tentatively, a portion of the business are, conclusively proves that our commercial men are out / for business, and their subsequent actions show that they are not merely "talkers, but •doers.'' Having discussed the matter hi a. thoroughly practical and comprehensive manner, and .iscertained full details'as. to the estimated cost of the outside (under verandah) scheme of liglitin"1. the executive is-promptly taking thenecessary steps to put the improvement into active operation. And we trust ere long to sec at least one business block showing ■a brilliant example to the other lousiness.men of the great-benefits to be derived from a combined lighting scheme, beneficial alike to vendor and customer. At the interview Mr. Hollands, the representative of. the Power Board, himself an enthusiast'On: the'mat? v ter of community lighting, was most informative and willingly gai4i' the most detailed information. Whilst personally favouring the window lighting idea, which however, was not favour- j ably entertained by the meeting, who unanimously preferred out- : side lights, Mr. Hollands went very fully into the cost, apparently a v&ry reasonable one con-! .sidering the benefits to be expect- \ ed therefrom, and promised the whole-hearted assistance and cooperation of the Board he represents, and himself, should the proposals be put into operation. Lit- I tie or. 1 no consideration, is needed ~ { to convince any business man or! woman of the manifest advantages to be gained by the adoption of" the scheme. In place of a dark/ ' dreary, sombre area unattractive to visitors to the town, a place to be avoided after dark, we hope soon to see a brilliantly lighted and attractive zone, in which will be displayed to the best advantage othe many commodities and articles of use and ornament, which are, and always have.been, obtainable locally. Nothing is surer than the fact that when local' residents can stroll through brilliantly lighted lines of shop fronts whilst out on their evening walks, and observe the quality and' variety of the goods displayed, the f slogan "Shop in the Hutt' will rer to their' memory, and trade : will improve as a result of the enterprise of the business men of the Lower Hutt Borough.
