GAS BOARD

A meeting of the Peton.e ami Lower Hutt'Gas Lighting Board was held last Tuesday night. Th#rc were present W. G. Lotlder (chairman), Messrs E. Hogg* p- Truscott, S. Clendon, W, G. MeMrnm and C. P. Brockelbank.' . A letter. from the family of the late Sir Joseph Ward thanking the Board for the resolution of sympathy was received. The Eetone Borough Council wroto agreeing to lease a portion of the Gas Works land' for £7/10/- per annum for a period of 12 years with-right to purchase ivt valuation. The site for the rifle rango has been moved southward, filial with Udy *Street and the portion of the lane allotted to t]ie Board is from the boundary of the rifle range to the southern, boundary of 'the Bouverie St*eet section. ■ It was; decided to ask the Council to "•put a. price on the land so that at any tnte the Board could purchase the land at the price agreed upon. ■ ".. • The Board decided that it could not agree to a reqiiest from workmen for holiday pay as they were employed on w«ak out of loan money and the Board therefore did not consider their positions «.>-• permanent. "y The Koro Koro Progressive Association wrote informing the Board that an extensive canvass of- the district had fooea made to find out how many residents favoured gas reticulation. Twentyfoar residents definitely expressed their willingness to\ join up and nine were hesitating. . The Board decided to hold the, matter over until next meeting and in the mean time get a contract price for /the work. The Gas Manager (Mr BT. Appleyard) reported that for the month of Jialy 726 tons of coal was carbonised, 1^,628,000 cubic feet of gas manuf ac- *

tured, with an average make per ton of 14,638 cubic feet. The increased manufacture over July, 1929 was 442,000 cubic feet. Estimate of coal in'stock on August 1,986 tons, 16cwt, l<lr a»d estimate of coke 75 tons. 184 tons of coke and 5600 gallons of tar were sold. During the month a full .supply of gaa w&s maintained without the use of th«> carburetting plant. This was due to having Newcastle coal with which was mix-, ed a percentage of State coal. July is usually the heaviest month in the year for gas and from now on the percentage of State coal used will be increased. The two settings of retorts in the new retort house has been finished and the whole of the work* will be completed when the concrete charging floor has been laid. During the month 42 new services were ■installed, 40 cookers, 6 renewal cookers, G coppers, 3 . caliphonts, 7 gas fires, 46 new meters, while 60 meters were charged and 30 meters repaired at the works.
