THE HOT LAKES CHRONICLE AND Tourists' Journal. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1895.

Various causes seem to liave operated in deterring any of tho banking institutions of the Colony from establishing a branch business in Rotorua. Whatever may have been tho reasons in the past, however, in neglecting the claims of Kotorua in this respect they no longer exist, and apart from the great boon which would be conferred upon business people here, the banks' own interests and those of their clients demand that the step should now be taken. Some years ago one of the Banks of this Colony purchased a site of land for the erection of a building, but the eruption of 1886 came, and as that sort of phenomena is not usually taken into consideration by financial institutions in calculating the probabilities of success, the project fell to the ground and has remained in abeyance ever since. It must of course be candidly admitted that we have 110 gigantic enterprises here in tho way of big farms or sheep stations which need the fostering care so accommodatingly bestowed upon them by tho banks generally, but we can certainlv point to the rapid advancement of the town and district, and to a very encouraging future outlook. In the old coaching days it would have been necessary to appoint a resident manager otherwise most of that functionary's time would have been occupied in travelling to and from the scene of his labors. In those days, however, with what is equivalent to a daily trai l to and from Auckland an official might be spared from one of the branches or agencies along the line to pay a weekly visit to Rotorua—as is the custom with places of less importance. The establishment of a branch bank in Rotorua would be of advantage to the corporation engaging in it, even if it were only looked upon in the light of an advertisement.
