THE PROPOSED REUNION OF THE CHURCHES.
There is naturally much controversy on the above Bubject in England, hut desirable as a closer bond of sympathy between the Christian churches is, a real reunion of the Anglican and Roman branches seems utterly impossible, as concessions would be necessary which the adherents of neither church as a whole would for a moment contemplate. Replying to Cardinal Yaugkan's lost utterances, which express somewhat the same views as the above, the Anglican Bishop of Wakefield says in a pastoral that the Cardinal has sought to make the approach to Rome easier by showing the length that many have already gone towards it. The Bishop says :—' It is true he produces a curious jumble of things, some of which are accepted by all ; some, changes which have no doctrinal bearing ; some, revived decencies and reverent observances of very ancient times, but some distinctively and unmistakeably Eomish. All these miscellaneous things, he 6ays, are to be found within the borders of the Church of England. lam afraid it is true. But I have several things to say about this. 1. I believe tho distinctively Romish teaching and practices ar3 confined to a very few of the clergy. 2. lam very thankful to feel that we in the North have very much less of these than is the case in the South. 3. We must all allow that wo have been gradually led during the last 50 years to more careful and intelligent teaching of Church doctrine, and to moie reverent, orderly, and decent rendering of Church services. 4. I believe the true policy of the Church is one of considerable liberty and of absolute justice to all.'
