THE CAUSE OF RUBINSTEIN'S DEATH.

Many are the anecdotes concerning Rubinstein tvbicb have been printed since the death of the great pianistcomposer took place. .Nothing more pathetic, however has been wiitten than Herr Zabel's account of the closing scene in his memorable life. On the Monday when the Emperor's funeral toik place, says this authority, he stayed up until eleven, ml had his accustomed rubber of whist, and thiiii retired to his bedroom. Madame Eubinetein, who was particularly anlious on this evenmgi untied tow ards 11.30 a light in her husband's room. She wnt to him as he lay in bed, pointed to the burning candle, and asked why he had net put it out. He suiiled, pointed to the clock, which was on a table near his bed, and said : 'There me five minutes yet.' He loved to have everj thing go as if by clockwork, and woilld not go to sleep before half-past eleven. Madame Kubinstf-in then withdrew to her room. But about one o'clock she was awakened by a piercing cry from her husband. She was hurrying to him when she met him at the door. Pale as death, and with the coverlet in his hand, lie stood before her and cried hoarsely, ' I am choking.' Madame Hubinste>7i trird to lead him back to bed. but he icfused, and remaioed in his wife's nrms until he died a few minuti s after«tir-Js. He had evidently had an apopletic stroke during his sleep, and in jumping out of bed was already djing* Excessive sincking, which was a habit from his early youth, seems to have accelerated his untimely end.
