HELP FOR THE BOOT INDUSTRY.
effort to expedite state ASSISTANCE. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Last Night. “After talking over with its representatives the position facing the boot manufacturing industry I promised that I would discuss matters with other members of Cabinet to see if the anmouncement of the Government's intentions to help the industry could not be expedited, ’ ’ said the Minister of Labour (Hon. H. T. Armstrong) to-day.
“The boot manufacturers are concerned with the likelihood of having to put off further operatives," he added. “They feel that many of the operatives dismissed would drift into other avenues of employment and that when trade revived again their skilled services would be lost to industry. If the industry knew definitely the Government’s intentions it could plan ahead and by adding to its stocks to meet the demand when normal conditions returned it could retain the services of men who otherwise might have to be dismissed."
