JAPS. GAIN MUCH GROUND AT HEAVY COST. CHIANG'S ,TROOPS REPLENISH 19TH ARMY. (Received This Day, 10.25 a.m.) (SHANGHAI, Feb. 25. Machine-gunns rattled on all sides .and hand-grenades ripped through the wave of Japanese attackers before a -desperate hand-to-hand fight ensued. The Chinese finally wavered and retreated in disorder, but more Chinese poured in from the second defencs, ral' lied the runaways, and are holding "iihe Japanese advance. The Japanese, however, have gained considera.ble ground, though with the loss of many lives. Additional forces from Chiang-kai-shek's troops have replaced the terribly depleted ranks of the 19th Army.
