Intensive Bombardment by Heavy Artillery. Woosimg Forts Demolished. Japan Rejects Powers’ Chief Proposals. —- United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.-—Copyright. (Received Thursday, 10.50 p.m.) SHANGHAI, February 4. Shanghai this morning was awakened by the heaviest gunfire since the outbreak of hostilities. Heavy artillery was used by both sides. Japanese cruisers and destroyers opened an intensive bombardment on the Chapei and Paoshan areas during the morning, the shells passing over the eastern and northern districts of the International Settlement and exploding in areas occupied by the Chinese, setting fire to the remaining parts of Chapei which had escaped the aerial bombardment. The conflagration is raging over a tremendous area and terrible devastation is proceeding. The Chinese intend continuing shelling until all the adjacent areas are unoccupied.
