Drastic Measures in Bombay
TO DEAL WITH ORGANISED VIOLENCE. Received Thursday, 9.50 p.m. CALCUTTA, Feb, 4. The Bombay Government has decided to adopt drastic measures to deal with organised violence which is a serious menace to the peace of the city. Hitherto the police have acted with the utmost restraint and have refrained from firing on the aggressive mobs, but instructions have been issued to the police to fire on crowds refusing to disperse. Replying to questions in the Indian Assembly Sir Evelyn Howell, Foreign Secretary, stated that since December 6000 persons, including Congressmen, had been arrested in the various districts in the North-west Frontier Province and the total now in frontier gaols was 10,000.
