Huge Grass Fire Causes Considerable Damage

WORST FOR 35 YEARS,

CANTERBURY FARMERS’ DESPERATE FIGHT,

CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. A grass fire in the Rolleston district this afternoon burnt out about 2000 acres of dried pasture land before- it was got under control by hundreds or fire fighters from all over the district. Six hundred acres of young pine plantations were destroyed. The only stock losses were about 20 sheep, which were overtaken before they could be driven to the ploughed land for safety. One farmer who left his car on -tne road while he went to beat the fire back from his house, returned to find the car burned.

The fire was the worst the district has known for 35 years. If it had spread to the closely settled area surrounding Springston and Lincoln as it would have done but for the work of the fire fighters, it would have been a serious disaster.
