Never shake a rug endways; this ruins all the fringes, and has a tendency to split the rug in the middle. Always shake rugs sideways.
If you have half, a lemon left over, put it on a plate with the cut side down. Cover with a tumbler, and the lemon will keep fresh.
Invisible mending can be done at home in this manner: Place the garment on a table and smear the wrong side jvith white of egg. Cut a piece of the material a little larger than the leaf, and press it carefully. Use a hot iron to make it set. This method should be adopted before the tear becomes very frayed.
Linoleum can be painted over with a cheap thin Varnish to make it last. A' good deal of polishing will then be eliminated. There are also several proprietary lines on the market for the same purpose. - : • * » * *
Borax drives black beetles away. If the insects seem to have taken a fancy •to any of your cupboards, sprinkle the shelves with borax after you have ■scrubbed them and before you’ cover them with paper. * * » *
If ho glue or paste is at hand, and you want to stick a label on, a tin or pot, a'piece of cold boiled potato nibbed over the surface will answer the purpose. ■ * *- * *
Shrunken woollen blankets may still be used if a sufficiently wide band is added to the end which goes under the mattress.
A good tiring for housewives to know is that if well-fitting shoes are worn when doing work about the house the feet will be less tired than when loose slippers are worn, which, though usually supposed to be restful, are really very, wearisome. »
