English Wine Merchant Arrested in America
ALLEGED ATTEMPT AT WHOLE SALE SMUGGLING.
Received Sunday, 9 p.m. , NEW YORK, May 24,
Edward Tathara, a member of the London wine of Gusterine and Drook’s, Limited, was released on 100,000 dollars’ bail by the Federal Judge Caffey to-day and pleaded not guilty to a conspiracy to violate the prohibition law.
Tathara, who was arrested when about to depart for Toronto, has engaged as counsel the firm of Coudert Brothers, attorneys here for the British Government.
A secret indictment was handed down last Wednesday against Tathnm and his linn. Assistant United States Attorney Watts informed the press that his office had boon investigating a proposal circulated among prominent New York business men for the smuggling of liquor from England into the United States.
Despatches from London state that, a representative of the firm expressed surprise at the indictment and disclaimed any knowledge of the export of liquor United ,States. Ho stated that Tatham -had made the trip .on business.
